Often, diseases of the upper respiratory tract are accompanied by a cough, which contributes to the rapid discharge of sputum. However, in the absence of expectoration, it is necessary to provoke it. One of the most effective drugs based on natural ingredients is Thermopsol, which also has a very low cost.

The composition of the drug
The main component of the drug is thermopsis extract. The action of this herb is based on the excitation of receptors located on the mucous membrane of the stomach. It begins to contract actively against the background of drug exposure, causing the urge to cough, and also reflexively increases the secretion of fluid by the bronchi. An expectorant also affects the upper respiratory tract and vomiting centers located on the root of the tongue. This is possible thanks to the natural alkaloids contained in the grass of thermopsis.
Sodium bicarbonate, which is part of the tablets, dilutes sputum, contributing to its easier and faster excretion from the body.
Potato starch and talcum powder are used as auxiliary components to form tablets.
Indications for use of Thermopsol
The main indication for prescribing a drug is sputum that is difficult to separate, located in the upper or lower respiratory tract.
Most often, it is formed during inflammatory processes of the mucous membranes of the bronchi (bronchitis) or trachea (tracheitis). Since a cough with viscous sputum is only one of the symptoms of the disease, then Thermopsol tablets are prescribed as one of the components in the process of complex therapy.
Instructions and dosage for children and adults
Instructions for use of the drug for patients of all ages are: one tablet three times a day. Duration should not exceed five days. The time of administration does not matter, however, it is recommended to take the medicine after meals. In the absence of the necessary effect, the dosage is gradually increased until a wet cough with sputum appears.
The maximum permitted single dose is different and depends on the age of the patient:
- “Thermopsol” for children up to a year - no more than 10 mg of thermopsis (content in one tablet of 6.7 mg of grass extract);
- for children under 4 years of age - not more than 15 mg of the active substance;
- up to 7 years - no more than 25 mg of thermopsis;
- up to 14 years - no more than 30 mg;
- for adult patients over 14 years old - no more than 100 mg.
A single dose of the drug for an adult should not exceed 14 tablets, and the maximum permitted daily allowance is 44 tablets.
During pregnancy and lactation
Thermopsol cough tablets contain alkaloids, which are able to penetrate the placenta and actively influence the development of the fetus. Also, the use of such substances during pregnancy can provoke a miscarriage due to muscle contraction and tonicity of the uterus. Exceptions are possible with prolonged bronchial cough in the last trimester as prescribed by an ENT specialist.
During lactation, all types of plant alkaloids also penetrate into milk. This can significantly affect both its characteristics and the health of the child. Therefore, during the treatment, the feeding process should be abandoned.
Contraindications, side effects and overdose
The main contraindication is an allergic reaction to at least one of the components of the herbal preparation, as well as ulcerative lesions of the stomach and duodenum.
A side effect of the drug is the appearance of vomiting, which can be stopped by lowering the daily dose or by completely refusing to take the tablets.
Overdose of “Thermopsol” with the appearance of any signs is not fixed.
Expectorant Analogs
An expectorant on plant components has several analogues.
- Tathimpharmpre. The preparation contains thermopsis herb as the main active substance. The analogue of “Thermopsol” has an identical composition with it and only slightly differs in price.
- “Codelac Broncho,” potion. The composition of the drug includes, in addition to thermopsis, ambroxol, which helps to reduce the density of sputum, as well as glycyrate, which has anti-inflammatory and antihistamine effects. A variety of forms of release helps to choose a more suitable option for both an adult and a child, however, the cost of tablets is five times higher.
"Thermopsol" is a cheap and effective tool that will help in the complex treatment to cope with bronchitis or tracheitis. Despite the presence of a number of contraindications, the drug can be used in most cases.
