The treatment of some lung diseases requires the use of effective agents that can sufficiently affect the expansion of the bronchi, liquefaction and discharge of sputum. These include Ascoril cough syrup, which has proven its therapeutic effectiveness.

The composition (active substance) of the drug

A distinctive feature of the drug is the ability to comprehensively influence the condition of the lungs and the effective removal of sputum from them.

The composition includes three active components that can provide this:

  • salbutamol - the substance selectively affects the smooth muscles of the bronchi, as a result of which they expand;
  • Bromhexine - the drug promotes the breakdown of sputum fibers without increasing its volume, which contributes to its easier removal from the respiratory tract;
  • guaifenesin is an expectorant component of the drug, which contributes to the effective removal of sputum from the trachea and bronchi by stimulating the activity of the cilia, which promote the foreign components up to the larynx.

And also an expectorant includes additional components:

  • sugar, flavors, sorbitol - to give a pleasant aftertaste;
  • sodium benzoate is used as a preservative;
  • glycerol - a component that has a protective and moisturizing effect on the mucosa;
  • propylene glycol - helps to bind components, forming a syrup form;
  • dye "Yellow Sunset" - a carcinogen that contributes to the color of the drug;
  • purified water.

Thanks to the inclusion of all these substances in the composition, Ascoril cough syrup has a pleasant texture, and even children are allowed to take it.

Pharmacological properties

The composition contains three active components, each of which has a specific mechanism of work. Therefore, the pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics of the drug relative to each individual substance should be considered.

Salbutamol reduces bronchospasm and is able to increase vital pulmonary volume. It is easily absorbed upon penetration into the body, has a high bioavailability. The absorption rate may decrease due to the combination of medication and food. The active substance is able to penetrate the placental layer. It is metabolized in the liver for 3-6 hours, excreted by the kidneys within three days after the end of the dose.

Guaifenesin is able to dilute sputum. It quickly reacts with the body, is absorbed from the stomach within an hour. In almost equal parts, the substance is excreted by the lungs with sputum and through the kidneys in an unchanged form or in the form of inactive metabolites.

Bromhexine is an expectorant that is completely absorbed from the stomach within half an hour. Moreover, the substance has low bioavailability, that is, only a small part is brought to its destination. This is due to passage through the liver. The drug component is able to penetrate the placenta. It is excreted by the kidneys within 15 hours, however, if there is a violation in their work, the speed may decrease. Repeated administration entails possible accumulation in the tissues.

What cough to take, with dry or wet

Indication for the use of Ascoril is any type of cough, provided that there is sputum in the lungs. This is due to the fact that the syrup contains the necessary elements to facilitate its discharge.

Instructions for use and dosage for children and adults

The medicinal substance is administered orally. If necessary, children can take it, mixing with a drink at room temperature. Instructions for use suggest the dependence of dosage on the age of the patient.

Children under 6 years of age are recommended a dosage of 15 ml of the drug during the day for three doses.

If the patient’s age is more than 6, but less than 12 years old, the doctor, depending on the intensity of the disease, prescribes from 5 ml to 10 ml three times a day.

Adults are prescribed 30 ml of syrup per day, it is recommended to divide into three doses.

The dosage can be increased in case of individual immunity, provided there are no side effects.

During pregnancy and breastfeeding

Ascoril Expectorant is a drug that is contraindicated for use during gestation. This is due to the ability of the constituent elements to penetrate through the placental layer, which can adversely affect the further development of the child.

Combining breastfeeding and taking Ascoril is also prohibited, so when it is prescribed, it is necessary to stop feeding for the duration of treatment.

Drug interaction

Taking the drug stimulates beta2-adrenergic receptors of the bronchi, expanding them. Therefore, co-administration with drugs that contain theophylline or salbutamol can lead to an overdose and a more pronounced manifestation of side effects (or their primary manifestations).

It is not recommended to combine the drug with antidepressants, which include MAO inhibitors, due to the presence of salbutamol. And synthetic hormones of the adrenal glands and diuretics enhance its effect.

Ascoril is not prescribed together with antitussive drugs, the action of which is aimed at inhibiting natural reflexes, since this makes it difficult to remove sputum.

Contraindications, side effects and overdose

The complex effect that Ascoril exerts is possible due to the combination of several effective components in the composition.

However, this interaction also leads to a number of contraindications.

The drug is contraindicated in cases:

  • possible allergic reactions to the drug;
  • disruption of the heart muscle or its inflammation;
  • congenital or acquired changes in the structure of the heart;
  • increased intraocular or blood pressure;
  • disturbances in the work of organs such as the kidneys, liver, stomach and duodenum;
  • the presence of internal bleeding.

If the patient has not reached the age of 6 years, it is necessary to prescribe the drug with extreme caution, since acute allergic reactions can occur. Although there is Ascoril cough syrup for children, the form of which allows the drug to be prescribed with relative safety.

And also it is worth paying special attention to the appointment of the drug to those patients who have diabetes or an ulcer.

Possible manifestation of side effects:

  • negative skin reactions (itching, rash, urticaria, anaphylactic shock);
  • nervous irritability, tremors, sleep disturbances, headaches and loss of orientation;
  • defecation disorder, nausea, or vomiting;
  • loss of consciousness and impaired heart rate;
  • the appearance of internal bleeding, exacerbation of peptic ulcers.

In cases of overdose, the revealed side effects are multiplied. In such situations, symptomatic treatment is necessary.
