2004 was a landmark year in the field of rose breeding. At this time, the first black tea-hybrid rose “Black Baccarat” was launched. But despite the uniqueness of the flower, do not rush to make it an inhabitant of the garden until a detailed study of the characteristics of the variety and the conditions for its cultivation.

Description and characteristics of the variety

The Black Baccarat variety is the result of the work of the French selection company Meilland. This species is represented by compact bushes with a height of up to 1.1 m, formed by graceful shoots, which are covered with glossy green foliage with a characteristic burgundy tint. In the period of continuous flowering, which is observed from the beginning of summer until the first days of autumn, goblet-shaped black buds bloom, acquiring a red tint when fully opened. The diameter of terry velvety inflorescences, collecting up to 40 petals, is 12 cm. Flowering bushes exude a light aroma with fresh and very pleasant notes.

The variety is characterized by medium resistance to disease, but it easily tolerates rainy weather conditions. According to the description of the flower given by the originator, a rose in open ground can withstand frosts of 10 ° C, but in more severe climatic zones it needs shelter.

Planting roses in the open ground

Planting dates depend on the climatic conditions of the growing region: in the southern regions, work is carried out in the fall, and in the more northern ones in the spring, which allows the seedlings to fully root and go into winter without the risk of freezing. The plot for the rose is selected sunny or slightly shaded, which has a beneficial effect on flowering. The soil should be light, fertile and acidic. It is the hydrogen indicator at the level of 7.0-8.0 points that helps to obtain the color of flowers, close to black. The preparation of the site is carried out previously by digging to a depth of 2 bayonet shovels with the simultaneous introduction of sand, compost and peat, which will make the soil structure more loose and light.

Step-by-step landing instructions:

  1. At the site, a landing pit is dug with dimensions slightly exceeding the similar parameters of the root system of the seedling.
  2. The rhizome of planting material is immersed in water for an hour, after which the bush is installed in the hole, where there is already a drainage layer of broken brick or other handy material.
  3. Rose "Black Baccarat" is sprinkled with soil so that the root neck is deepened by a maximum of 3 cm.
  4. Next, the near-stem circle is compacted and moistened, so that no air layers are formed around the roots, which can cause the development of a fungal disease.

With spring planting, which is carried out in a similar way, the bushes will lag behind in development from autumn by 2 weeks.

How to care for a hybrid tea rose

Black tea-hybrid rose Black Baccara for full development needs some care, which has its own nuances.

Watering

For irrigation, the frequency and volume of which depend on the agroclimatic conditions of the cultivation region (weather conditions, soil type and composition, etc.), only warm, settled water is used. Water procedures by the intrasoil method are carried out either in the morning or in the evening. Do not allow moisture to get on the leaf plates - this can trigger the development of such fungal diseases as gray rot or rust.

Soil treatment

After watering or precipitation, the soil in the near-stem circle loosens to provide good aeration and water permeability. To reduce the number of loosening, it is recommended to cover the soil under the bush with a layer of mulch (peat, compost), which also acts as an organic fertilizer that increases the fertility of the arable layer.

Top dressing

During the growing season, 3 top dressings are carried out:

  1. In the spring, immediately after removing the shelter, nitrogen contained in organic or mineral fertilizers (manure, urea, ammonium nitrate) is introduced under the bush.
  2. During the budding period, phosphorus and potassium are introduced into the top dressing.
  3. To strengthen the immune system after flowering, the flower is fed with potassium sulfate.

Flower pruning - complete instructions

The Black Baccarat variety should be trimmed at least twice per season.

In the spring before the start of sap flow:

  1. Dried shoots are completely removed.
  2. Frozen and diseased branches are cut to healthy tissue.
  3. The remaining shoots are shortened at an angle to the fourth kidney.

The procedure uses a sterile and sharp instrument.

In the autumn after flowering:

  1. Fatty shoots and all faded ones are removed.
  2. The remaining branches are shortened to a height of 40 cm.

To preserve the decorativeness of the rose, during the summer season, when flowering continues, dried inflorescences are cut off as necessary.

Shelter of roses for the winter

Shelter can be started after the first frost, when there are no leaves on the bushes. The rose swells with the help of the earth to a shoot height of 40 cm. Next, the plants are covered with fallen leaves so that the branches are not visible. If "Black Baccarat" is grown in harsh climatic conditions, it is recommended to install frames above the bushes and cover them with fir spruce or ruberoid, and with a film on top.

On a note! In southern temperate regions, shelter in the form of an earthen embankment is sufficient.

Pest and Disease Control

The Black Baccarat variety is less susceptible to powdery mildew. However, preventive measures in the form of spring treatment with a copper-containing preparation will not be superfluous. If water gets on the shoots or during systematic waterlogging of the soil in the near-stem circle, the development of gray rot or rust is possible, which fungicides will help to cope with. Common pests include aphids, spider mites, thrips and cicadas. An effective protective measure is insecticidal preparations, which must be used according to the manufacturer's instructions indicated on the package.
