One of the most recognizable cocktails with a worldwide reputation is Mojito, the preparation of which is so numerous that everyone will find an option to their taste.

Mojito cocktail - the story of the drink

There are several versions of the appearance of Mojito. According to one of them, the precursor of the drink appeared in the XVI century, when pirates added mint and lime to rum to remove bitterness from low-quality alcohol.

The traditional version of the Mojito alcohol cocktail was invented in Cuba either in 1930, or in 1940 (this fact remains controversial). Reliably known only the date and month - May 25. Interestingly, locals still annually celebrate a unique drink's birthday on the night of May 25th.

Classic Mojito Alcoholic Cocktail Recipe

During its existence, the Mojito alcohol cocktail has undergone a variety of modifications. So, in some places, rum is replaced with any strong alcohol, instead of cane sugar they put ordinary white, Cuban mint is replaced with other varieties, lime with lemon, etc. But if you want to follow all the traditions, you need to make a drink according to the classic recipe.

Proper Mojito Cocktail

An alcoholic beverage consists of the following ingredients:

  • white rum (preferably Bacardi or Havana Club) - 40 - 50 ml;
  • mint (leaves only) - 7 - 8 pcs.;
  • refined sugar - 2 tsp;
  • lime - 1 pc.;
  • soda - 150 ml;
  • crushed ice.

Stages of preparation:

  1. Lime cut into 4 parts. Squeeze the juice out of 3.
  2. In a tall glass (highball or collins) put mint leaves, sugar, lime juice. Crush all this with a bar spoon with a red tip or mortar.
  3. Pour ice on 2/3 of the capacity.
  4. Pour rum and soda water, gently stir with a straw.
  5. Garnish with a slice of lime, ice and mint leaves.

The nuances of cooking, how to mix the components?

There are several tricks that will help make Mojito, as in the original recipe.

So, a cocktail is made using the “build” method, that is, it is literally lined up in the container in which it will be served.

Therefore, to prepare the drink does not need to use any special means. The main thing is to choose a tall and most straight glass. Martini glasses and any other that have a leg in it will not work. Indeed, to knead mint, you need a stable flat bottom.

In the right cocktail, the proportions of the ingredients are 1: 3.

Sugar, juice and mint occupy the first third, ice - the second, and alcohol and / or soda - the last part. And only in such a sequence all products are mixed.

Another important fact is the selection of components. All products must be of high quality and fresh. It is advisable not to replace them with analogues, but to use traditional ones.

  • So, rum should be taken in white. Perhaps dark varieties may seem tastier, because they have a more pronounced coffee, caramel or chocolate flavor, but in a cocktail this will likely be a minus than a pleasant addition.
  • As for mint, you need to take only the most fragrant varieties of pepper. Her leaflets contain essential oils, which, when rubbed, give the necessary taste and smell. The stem part is not necessary to put, otherwise the drink will be bitter. By the way, the grass needs to be kneaded exactly, for 20 - 30 seconds, and not crushed. After all, too small particles will fall into the mouth or clog into the tube.
  • Soda can be replaced with plain sparkling water. But with sweet drinks like Schweppes or Sprite it’s better not to experiment. After all, the cocktail should be refreshing and slightly sour, and these sorts of soda contain too much sugar. The latter, by the way, can be used in any color.
  • The next item is citrus fruits. It is important to make a remark here: lime is not a lemon, it has a slightly different taste, so it is also not worth replacing it.
  • And the last important nuance is ice. It should be in the form of crumbs, not cubes and not snow. The ideal option is to use an icescher. If there is none, then to get the desired shape, it is enough to take a large piece of ice, wrap it in a towel or thick paper and smash it with a hammer, bottle or rolling pin.

Grinding in a blender does not make sense, because the output will be wet porridge, which is completely unsuitable for a cocktail. And, of course, if the ice is homemade, then when freezing water, you should avoid the presence of strongly smelling products in the freezer, because it absorbs all extraneous odors.

Making a non-alcoholic cocktail

Non-alcoholic Mojito mixes in the same way as alcoholic, with the exception of rum.

Only 5 ingredients are needed:

  • mint;
  • lime juice;
  • sugar;
  • soda;
  • ice.

At the bottom of the glass, put 4 - 5 leaves of greenery (if desired, it can be replaced with sage or basil), pour 2 tsp. sugar and add about 30 - 40 ml of lime juice. Grind the ingredients to get a classic menthol flavor. After that, fill the glass to the top with crushed ice and pour in sparkling water. Serve immediately after preparation, decorating a glass with a wedge of lime.

How to serve a beautiful Mojito cocktail

The simplest decoration is additional accessories for the drink. For these purposes, tubes of different colors, sizes or shapes, umbrellas, skewers with skewered fruits and berries are suitable. Do not forget about unusual supports for glasses, which can serve as part of the composition.

You can decorate the glass itself with the help of edible elements:

  • a bunch of mint leaves;
  • slices of lime, lemon, orange;
  • cocktail cherry;
  • whole or chopped strawberries, raspberries, blackberries;
  • serpentine peeled lemon (orange) peel;
  • unpeeled slices of tropical fruits, such as pineapple with a piece of ponytail and peel.

The sugar rim looks very impressive in cocktails. For this, the edges of the glass must be moistened with water. After that, the glass is turned over and put on a board with granulated sugar and a little scroll. By the way, instead of plain water, you can use orange or strawberry juice. Then the outline will be colored.

And to add color to the cocktail itself, you need to use a little trick. To give a richer green tint, it is permissible to add a little "Mint Green" syrup. If you want to experiment with the palette and get a bright red or blue color, then the Grenadine and Blue Curacao syrups are suitable.
