Today, residents of big cities can no longer imagine their lives without the subway. This is the most convenient option for public transport - fast, inexpensive, comfortable in any weather. Which cities of Russia have been traveling the metro for a long time, and where the metro has been recently opened - interesting information in our article.

In which cities of Russia is there a metro

Understanding where in our country there is a metro, it will be possible to find a lot of interesting information about the domestic metro. For example, its total length in all cities of the country is less than the same parameter of the New York subway.

Despite this, the metro in Russia manages to deliver more than 3 billion passengers annually to the right place.

In many large cities of the country, it is planned to build an "underground road" in the very near future.

And today, residents of the following settlements can ride the subway:

  1. Moscow. The metropolitan subway is the oldest in the country. In terms of workload, it is one of the five most visited metro passengers daily in the world. Interestingly, in the near future, more than 70 new Moscow metro stations are preparing for opening. The total length of the lines today is more than 300 km.
  2. St. Petersburg. The subway of the northern capital also excelled. She became the deepest in the world. Building the metro in St. Petersburg was extremely difficult. The main difficulty was the fight against soil waters.
  3. Nizhny Novgorod. There are only 2 lines and 14 stations. The Gorky metro also has a very unusual part - a bridge over the river.
  4. NovosibirskIn this city, the subway can be called the most extreme in the world because of the severe freezing of the earth from Siberian frosts in the winter season.
  5. Samara There is only one line, 9 underground and 1 ground station. There are only 4 trains in operation, which transport about 40 thousand passengers daily.
  6. Yekaterinburg. The subway in this city turned out to be the last one launched during Soviet times. There is also 1 line and less than 10 stations, but more than 165 thousand people use the metro daily.
  7. Kazan. The metro was presented to the city for its 1000th anniversary. So far, this is the only metro that began to work after the collapse of the Union.

In addition, in one of the cities of the Krasnoyarsk Territory (Zheleznogorsk), an electric train sets off daily, part of the road which passes underground. It has been working since the middle of the last century.

The deepest subway station

You can get acquainted with the deepest metro in Russia in St. Petersburg. This is the Admiralteyskaya station. As already noted above, it is the St. Petersburg metro as a whole that is considered the deepest. So it had to be done because of the characteristics of the soil and climate.

The metro station under discussion was laid at a depth of 102 meters. But in all world ratings you can see the figure 86 m. This is because the official calculation is carried out along the length of the escalator.

To get to the Admiralteyskaya, the passenger will first have to overcome the ground lobby, and then a cascade of two escalators. The decoration at the station is quite simple. To decorate the lobby, a mosaic (panel) on the theme of the navy was used. When the Neva opens for passage of ships, it is this metro station that starts working around the clock.

It is interesting that it was built at the end of the last century. But for a long time the station was considered a "ghost" and stood idle. Only in the winter of 2011 its official opening took place - very solemn and bright.

In second place was one of the Moscow subway stations. This is Victory Park. Its official depth is 74 meters. This station also managed to stand out. It has the longest escalator in the world. Its length exceeds 120 meters. But under the ground, he descends only 74 meters.

The station is very interestingly decorated. Its design is dedicated to the military victories of Russia. It is both 1812 and 1945. Work on the construction of the station began back in 1990, but quickly ceased. They managed to resume them only after a long 10 years. All construction work and changes stopped only in 2017. Tourists visiting the station, first of all try to admire two panels of Zurab Tsereteli. True, critics to this day respond to these works of art extremely negatively. First of all, due to a clear historical discrepancy.

The first metro in Russia

Interestingly, the design of the construction of the first metro began in the 19th century. A company of eminent Muscovites decided to create an electric railway in the city, part of which was supposed to go underground. The first construction work was even begun.

At that time, the main form of public transport was driven by horses, so the new project surprised and scared the townspeople.

In addition, it was assumed that private investors would finance the construction. The city authorities categorically did not like this idea, because the income from a new type of transport in this case would flow past their treasury. Both reasons did not allow the project to develop.

The real process of building the metro was begun only in the early 30s of the 20th century. The government decided to urgently build a subway. And already in 1935, the first passengers were able to reach their destination with a completely new mode of transport. For this purpose eight trains were involved at once.

Large-scale construction of the subway was interrupted by the war. Only after its completion did it resume. The process continues to this day. All new stations are appearing.

It was the Sokolnicheskaya line of the Moscow metro that was first built and started working. In mid-May 1935, the townspeople were able to board the new train at the Sokolniki station and drive to the Culture Park. A branch to Smolenskaya immediately appeared.

List of subways under construction and planned

Initially, there were huge plans for the construction of the metro for the post-Soviet period. True, to this day, most of them have not been able to realize. So, the lack of finance from the state budget to this day has not allowed building a subway in Perm, Voronezh, Rostov-on-Don and many other cities. Most of the projects were suspended or completely closed. Repeatedly organized even large-scale rallies by local residents, who called on the authorities to make their lives more convenient and comfortable by completing the construction of the metro. But, unfortunately, they did not lead to any positive results.

  • For example, in Krasnoyarsk it is still planned to build a subway. But to continue the project will be at least 20 years later.
  • Regarding the Perm subway, it is not at all possible to get any official comments.
  • And in Khabarovsk, the construction of the subway was completely prohibited. Numerous commissions have confirmed that it is impossible to make the metro in the city due to the dense large-scale network of underground rivers.
  • Chelyabinsk was more fortunate. An underground in this city began to be built gradually back in 1992, and work in this direction is ongoing to this day. But city officials promise that the grand opening of the subway will take place in 2019.
  • In Voronezh, plans for the construction of the metro were radically changed. It is currently planned to make it “lightweight." But work in this direction has not been started.

The most active work is still being carried out in the capital. The underground in Moscow is becoming increasingly large-scale and capable of transporting an increasing number of citizens.

Metro schemes of Russian cities

Special schemes help you not to get lost in the subway and always easily find the right station. There are such in every city. They will be useful to everyone who plans to use the services of the subway.

The metro scheme is usually hung on the walls inside the car so that passengers can familiarize themselves with it during the journey and correctly determine where to move on. But it is always more convenient to carry it with you.

Today it is easy to download a thematic application with useful tips or just buy a paper version.

If the necessary metro scheme was not at hand, it can always be found on the web. For example, on thematic sites with maps of each city, useful addresses, phone numbers and other important information.

Metro - a quick and convenient form of public underground transport. It is warm in a harsh winter and cool, comfortable in a hot summer. These advantages explain the popularity of the subway among modern passengers.
