Bloody Mary - the story of the cocktail

The legendary Bloody Mary cocktail appeared in the French capital in a bar called the New York Harry Bar. This event took place at the beginning of the 20th century, and more specifically, in 1921. Fernando Petio (nickname Pete) was considered the creator of this drink, although he himself gave the palm to the unknown George Essel. Nevertheless, Pete is credited with the fact that it was he who first began to add various sauces and spices to the cocktail. It was they who “made” the “Bloody Mary”.

You must not forget about it, because today most people think that the cocktail itself, except for mixed tomatoes and vodka, does not represent anything.

Worcester was the first sauce Pete added to the drink. Even some time after moving to New York, he tried to add something new to the cocktail, to improve it. Pete did not pass by the spicy Tabasco sauce.

At the very beginning, only citrus slices were added to the cocktail. And that's it. A sprig of celery, the presence of which is considered traditional today, appeared in the cocktail due to the oversight of one bartender at the Ambassador Hotel in Chicago. He just forgot to put a special stick in the drink for mixing. But the woman who made his order did not get confused and began to stir the drink with a sprig of celery.

The name "Bloody" cocktail received solely because of its color, and "Mary" in honor of Mary Pickford, the then-famous Hollywood actress. Mary was one of the first to participate in the tasting of a new cocktail.

Classic Cocktail Recipe

Ingredients:

  • Celery (sprig).
  • Tomato juice (150 ml).
  • Sauce "Tabasco" and "Worcesters" (three drops each).
  • Lemon juice (15 ml).
  • Good quality vodka (75 ml).
  • Spices (ground black pepper, salt - one gram).
