It is not known for certain who and when invented the Cosmopolitan cocktail, but the stunning popularity came to him in the “zero”, after the release of the cult female series “Sex and the City”. Today, an alcoholic drink with an original daring taste is appreciated by the best bartenders around the world and is firmly held in the top IBA list. However, a simple Cosmopolitan cocktail recipe makes it easy to make at home.

History of the drink

A promising name, a spectacular appearance ... it would seem that the story of the cocktail creation should be appropriate - a mysterious, shrouded romance and bright events.

But no, despite the presence of 4 basic versions of the appearance of Cosmopolitan, they are all quite prosaic:

  1. Cosmopolitan was created by an anonymous bartender in the distant 70s of the last century. Then he was known only to a narrow circle of people - patrons of underground nightclubs in America, and, more simply, gays.
  2. The recipe saw the light in Florida in 1985 with the light hand of barmaid Cheryl Cook. According to the woman’s observations, visitors ordered a boring colorless martini solely because of its presentation in a stylish, graceful glass. So she decided to come up with a more expressive cocktail for Martini Glass, for which she mixed vodka, Triple Sec liquor, cranberry and lemon juices. She positioned her invention as a “poser” drink — that is, one that would help put the taster in a favorable light.
  3. The alcoholic masterpiece was "born" in Manhattan in 1987 thanks to the resourceful bartender Toby Zizzini.His recipe was similar to the version from the previous version, only two ingredients differed: lime was used instead of lemon, and Triple-s liqueur was replaced with French counterpart Cointreau. It is the version created by Cizzini that today is considered a classic, recognized by the International Association of Bartenders.
  4. The Cosmopolitan recipe in 1988 was invented by employees of the Absolute alcohol brand in support of their new product, Absolut Citron, a citrus-flavored vodka.

Today, the father of the legendary Cosmo is also called the American cocktail king, bartender Dale De Groff, who worked at the Rainbow Room in Rockefeller Center. It was he who once was lucky to make this drink to Madonna, who later became her "favorite." By the way, loyal fans of the star insist that she, and not the heroine of Sarah Jessica Parker, first appeared on the screens with a glass of Cosmopolitan in her hand.

The right ingredients

Despite the abundance of modern variations of this drink - blue, non-alcoholic, apple, Japanese, etc., the reference composition of the Cosmopolitan cocktail consists of only 4 components:

  • citrus vodka;
  • Cointreau liquor;
  • natural cranberry juice;
  • freshly squeezed lime juice.

Please note that ice, as the basic ingredient of all cocktails, is used exclusively to cool the glass before serving the drink.

Classic Cosmopolitan Cocktail Recipe

To get the very phenomenal taste that excites the beautiful half of humanity, you do not need to be a professional bartender. It’s enough to take a classic recipe and correctly combine high-quality ingredients. There are, of course, some subtleties of creating an alcoholic masterpiece.

Ingredients for 1 Serving:

  • 45 ml of Absolut Citron Vodka;
  • 15 ml Cointreau;
  • 30 ml cranberry juice;
  • 10 ml lime juice.

You will also need:

  • a generous portion of ice cubes;
  • martini glass;
  • jigger;
  • shaker;
  • strainer.

Cooking Technology:

  1. Martini Glass is completely filled with ice.
  2. Squeeze juice from lime.
  3. We measure the indicated amount of vodka, liquor, fruit juice with a jigger.
  4. Pour 2/3 of the ice into the shaker, place all the other ingredients there.
  5. Shake vigorously ∼30-60 seconds.
  6. Remove ice from the glass.
  7. Using a strainer that prevents ice fragments from falling into the martinka, we pour the finished cocktail into it with a sharp movement. With this simple maneuver, you can get a light foam on the surface of the drink.
  8. Decorate the glass with a thin wedge of lime.

Important! Cosmopolitan is always served without a cocktail straw.

Due to correctly selected proportions of the ingredients, the cocktail turns out to be surprisingly soft, rich and exciting taste buds. With proper preparation of the drink, vodka in the composition is not at all felt.

Have you ever wondered why Cosmo is served in a cone-shaped dish with a high leg? Everything is simple - this shape of the glass perfectly reveals the aroma of the cocktail and keeps it cool for a long time.

Non-alcoholic version of the drink

A fortified sweet cocktail - a non-alcoholic version of the famous Cosmopolitan, will appeal not only to the kids. It will also become the highlight of the feast for people who adhere to a healthy lifestyle, or for those who, for various reasons, cannot use alcohol-containing products (for example, pregnant women).

Ingredients:

  • 100 ml of orange / peach juice;
  • 50 ml cranberry juice;
  • 1 tbsp. l pomegranate syrup;
  • 30 ml Sprite drink;
  • a handful of ice cubes;
  • spiral from orange zest to decorate a glass.

Cooking Technology:

  1. All components are mixed in a shaker (or any other convenient container).
  2. At the bottom of the dishes in which we will serve the drink, pour ice.
  3. Pour the prepared mixture into a glass, decorate it with an orange spiral.

Today on the shelves of supermarkets you can find the Cosmopolitan syrup, which tastes like a famous American creation.We get a much simpler version of the non-alcoholic “Cosmo” by simply combining 25 ml of this syrup and 75 ml of water (can be carbonated).

How to do with grenadine

If desired, make the classic Cosmopolitan sweeter and more viscous if you include a few drops of grenadine in the recipe. The syrup will add sugar pomegranate notes to the drink, and its color will become juicier and more saturated. The editorial board of the trendy magazine Marie Claire, published in many countries of the world, calls Cosmopolitan with grenadine a winter version of the cocktail and suggests slightly “seasoning” it with aromatic herbs.

Ingredients:

  • 30 ml of vodka;
  • 30 ml cranberry juice;
  • 30 ml grenadine;
  • 100 ml of champagne;
  • decorative ice.

For decorative ice:

  • 1-2 handfuls of cranberries or other red berries;
  • several branches of rosemary;
  • water;
  • molds for ice.

Cooking Technology:

  1. On the eve of the event for which it is planned to make the Cosmopolitan cocktail, we are preparing decorative ice. In a container designed to receive it, pour boiled water into which we place berries and rosemary leaves. We send the composition to the freezer until it completely solidifies.
  2. We prepare a cocktail directly. To do this, mix vodka with grenadine, dilute with cranberry juice, supplement with champagne.
  3. Pour the finished drink into glasses, put 2-3 berry-herbal ice cubes in each.

Cosmopolitan Cocktail with Martini

Although the composition of the Cosmopolitan cocktail in this interpretation is far from classical, the end result is spectacular aromatic and incredibly tasty - an ideal solution for a bachelorette party.

Ingredients:

  • 150 g of frozen or fresh cranberries;
  • 150 ml martini;
  • 80 ml of vodka;
  • 400 ml of water;
  • 1 tbsp. l sugar and icing sugar.

Cooking Technology:

  1. We prepare the berries: fresh, frozen, we leave for several hours to thaw.
  2. Mash cranberries to a porridge-like state, cover with sugar, add water, put on fire and bring to a boil.
  3. Cool the resulting syrup, filter.
  4. Mix with vodka and icing sugar, leave in the cold for half an hour.
  5. Add martini to the cocktail, mix, pour into glasses.

With a lack of time, you can simplify the preparation by taking the classic recipe for the famous alcoholic drink, replacing orange liquor with Martini vermouth in it.

Cooking with Limoncello Liquor

This refined (and strong enough!) Variety of Cosmopolitan even received a separate “name”, derived from the names of the cocktail and Italian lemon liquor. To understand whether there is really something cosmic in the drink, be sure to try making it.

For Cosmoshello you will need the following ingredients:

  • 45 ml of Absolut Citron Vodka;
  • 15 ml Cointreau;
  • 10 ml Limoncello;
  • 30 ml cranberry juice or fruit drink;
  • 6-10 ice cubes;
  • sugar to decorate martinka.

Cooking Technology:

  1. We place ice cubes in the shaker, measure the required volume of all components with a jigger, pour them into the prepared container.
  2. Mix all the ingredients for about 1 minute.
  3. Pre-cool the martinka, then wet the outer edge of the glass with water and “dip” it in sugar (pour granulated sugar in a saucer, hold the glass by the leg and carefully rotate it so that the grains stick to the wet edge). So we get a beautiful snowy edge.
  4. Pour the contents of the shaker into the glasses. To prevent ice from falling into them, we use a strainer or strainer.

With orange fresh

If you don’t like the light cranberry note in the classic Cosmo, you can make another original variety of cocktail. This variation of the alcoholic drink was called "Orange", because the cranberry natural juice in it is successfully replaced by aromatic orange fresh.

Ingredients:

  • 40 ml of Absolute Citron vodka;
  • 15 ml "Cointreau";
  • 8 ml of lime or lemon juice (freshly squeezed);
  • 30 ml of orange fresh;
  • ice to cool the glass and mix the components in a shaker;
  • orange zest for decoration.

Cooking Technology:

  1. Cool the martins, filling them with ice cubes (do not forget to remove it before pouring the drink!).
  2. We measure the right amount of alcohol in a shaker, squeeze lime juice there, pour in freshly prepared fresh, and fill the remaining free space with ice.
  3. Shake the composition vigorously several times.
  4. Pour the cocktail into empty glasses, while leaving the ice in a shaker.
  5. We decorate the martinka with a spiral carved from the zest.

In addition to the proposed recipes, Cosmo is also prepared with strawberries, apple juice, Monin Blue Curaçao liqueur. It is not so important which of the options will become your favorite, it is important to drink this megapopular cocktail correctly - slowly and in small sips, because only in this way it will be possible to catch the whole variety of shades of its mild taste.
