Jericho rose is an original plant with a unique ability to “resurrect”, barely touching moisture. An amazing sight unfolds before the eyes: a compressed lump spreads shoots in a matter of minutes.

What is this flower, description

Hearing such an unusual name, many are interested in: what is the Jericho rose? In the natural environment, the plant grows in western Asia and North Africa, in the form of tumbleweed. According to the Russian writer and poet A.I. Bunin, who wrote the story "Rose of Jericho" after a trip to the East, the life cycle of an exotic plant is 50 years.

In nature, the vegetation of small bushes up to 15 cm high begins in early spring, while there is a supply of moisture in the desert territories. The growth period is very compressed: the plant blooms quickly and forms fruits in a short period of time.

With the onset of the dry period, the stems twist inward, forming a ball, which, under the influence of the wind, breaks off and rolls around the open spaces. Over time, due to the encounters of such tumbleweeds with each other, a large lump forms, which, reaching moisture, blossoms like a marvelous flower, spilling out rapidly growing seeds.

On a note. Despite the fact that the shoots of the Jericho rose bloom, one should not trust the stories that they come to life, giving new greens.

Site selection and soil preparation

Jericho roses go on sale in the form of woven lumps formed by dried shoots.

To observe the amazing "resurrection" of a flower, you must:

  • choose a shaded place in the room, away from sunlight and heating appliances;
  • place the “ball” in a bowl where a little water is collected (no more than 2 cm), and after 24 hours, when the exotica blooms, move to a container with sand with a small amount of pebbles.

This plant does not need fertilizers and any top dressing, which is its undoubted advantage.

Important! The rose should only be placed in warm water.

Landing at the cottage

The exotic plant is a representative of the arid climate and grows in open ground only in the deserts of Asia and Africa. In temperate latitudes, its growth is impossible due to agro-climatic conditions, including soil composition, climatic zone with alternating winter and summer, humidity.

In flower shops, plants are presented in the form of dried glomeruli, which are valued precisely for the unique ability to "regenerate." Although it is worthwhile to clarify that the crown is revealed, it does not turn green, according to unscrupulous sellers whose goal is to quickly sell.

Jericho Rose Care

Growing a Jericho rose is a fascinating process that does not take much time and energy. After the rose has opened, water should be regularly added to the container where it is located, after which the rose should be moved to a sand and pebble mixture.

If the shoots show manifestations of mold, then the flower is treated with fungicide. The optimum temperature is 18-20 ° C. Since dead branches do not turn green, they should be removed to stimulate the growth of new shoots.

The Jericho rose needs regular rest, before which it is no longer watered. Then it dries well and is cleaned in the form of a ball in a dark cabinet. The duration of the stagnation stage is 14-15 days, after which the flower can be “awakened” again.

How to propagate a flower

The described plant has nothing to do with a garden rose, and it is impossible to propagate it at home.

The unique flower is a long-liver. After contact with water, when the shoots open, a new green mass begins to grow, on which seed boxes should form after flowering.

But if in the wild a representative of the flora travels like a tumbleweed and throws out the seed in a humid place, then this does not happen at home.

Use in landscape design

Designers sometimes use the Jericho rose to decorate a rock garden, because it does not require soil. But, as a rule, it is used for landscaping a room environment.

Rose application:

  • performs the functions of a humidifier, saturating the air with oxygen;
  • represents a natural freshener: fills the room with spicy aromas;
  • used for growing in the aquarium and decorating other artificial ponds;
  • disinfects air, killing harmful microorganisms that are the causative agents of various diseases;
  • absorbs tobacco smoke;
  • at rest, destroys the mole;
  • due to its specific properties it prevents allergic attacks;
  • Helps fight insomnia, providing a sound and healthy sleep.

Jericho rose is a unique plant that, although it bears no resemblance to the queen of our flower beds, is a truly impressive plant. Moreover, care at home for an extraordinary flower is within the power of even people who have not previously been engaged in growing indoor crops.
