Arabic surnames consist of several parts. They are selected carefully, are important not only for the child, but also for parents. On giving, the Prophet Muhammad said that the name of a person should “justify” and with the result appear before Allah.

Origin history

By the name of the Arabs, you can understand their origin, it also helps to exclude marriage within the immediate circle of the family. There is a certain tradition in the formation of the Arabic name and surname.

All elements that were necessarily included in ancient times are no longer required, but are often used:

  • alam is the name of the child;
  • Nasab talks about the origin of the child, indicates whose descendant he is - his father, grandfather, and so on. In this case, the boys are given the prefix ibn, which means a son, and for girls - a bandage, that is, a daughter;
  • Kunya begins with the word "abu", indicates the successor of the clan, after this word a long list of famous progenitors can follow;
  • lakab spoke of the title, but could be given as a nickname or pseudonym;
  • Nisba narrated about belonging to a tribe or community: it could be the name of a village, city, or designated locality, profession.

Arabs tend to honor traditions, but modernity dictates different rules. For official documents, long names in Arabic are completely unsuitable, and therefore resort to the formation of surnames from names. This is achieved thanks to lacaba or nisbu, which have been assigned to a particular family for a long time.

The meaning of the prefix "al" in Arabic surnames

Nisbahs begin with the prefix "al" in Arabic surnames. Thanks to her, you can find out:

  • what the ancestors worked for;
  • what tribe they were from;
  • which social group the owner belongs to;
  • from which city or town he is;
  • what dynasty the carrier belongs to;
  • can report on the calling of the clan, its field of work.

It is nisbas that serve as the basis for modern Arabic surnames, only in this case the prefix "al" is removed.

Beautiful surnames for girls

In Arab countries, women's names do not bear male borrowings, and therefore they usually consist of the same names.

The most beautiful Arabic surnames for women are often similar to the names:

  • Aigul in translation means "flower of the moon";
  • Guzelia - “unimaginable beauty;”
  • Dilshat - “brings joy”;
  • Firuza - “happy”;
  • Dilia is “mental”.

Among the Arab famous women, world famous names and surnames:

  • Lina Al-Hindi - Fashion Model;
  • Rania Barghouti - television presenter;
  • Nancy Yasin - Fashion Model;
  • May Mashal - film actress;
  • Karen Marzuk is a track and field athlete.

For modernity, only the name and surname of the girls who were given at birth is used, and the Arabic full version can be much longer and tell more about the carrier.

Arabic for men

Arab male surnames use most often male names belonging to their ancestors. It is also important that each member of the family can choose for his child the name of the relative whom he respects to a greater extent, and therefore in one family the surnames can differ significantly.

The most common names used for masculine surnames are:

  • Hussein in translation means "beautiful";
  • Habibi - “beloved”;
  • Abbas - the "lion";
  • Abdullah - “the servant of Allah”;
  • Sahim is “watchful.”

All the names in which the prefix "din" is present means "faith", and the names with it indicate belonging to religion. For example, Safe-ad-Din literally translates as “sword of faith”.

Among the famous Arab men there are such names:

  • Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum - prince of the UAE;
  • Mansour ibn Zayed al-Nahyan - brother of the family of the emirate of Abu Dhabi;
  • Mehmet Akif - model, actor;
  • Sari Abboud - singer;
  • Walid al-Wasmi is a singer.

For more memorization and the possibility of existing in European reality, singers and actors often abbreviate their names. It will be more difficult for fans to remember long and complex combinations than short and sonorous Arabic surnames. Even princes abbreviate their full names and use abridged versions of them in official documents.

List of the most popular surnames

It is worth noting that there are also the most popular Arabic surnames. Since they all originate from the names of their ancestors, by and large this list will be identical to the list of the most popular names in Arab countries.

The translation of the most famous and used will be as follows:

  • Muhamed - “praised”;
  • Ahmed - “the one that is praised”;
  • Said - “lucky”;
  • Fatima - “abstinence”;
  • Ibrahim - “father of nations”;

  • Navra - the "flower";
  • Mustafa - “the chosen one”;
  • The Imam is the "leader";

As a result of the combination of several names, their own and that which has passed from their ancestors, it turns out that the Arabs do not bear names, middle names and surnames, but solid names with various prefixes and articles. Such a system has been used for a long time, adopted by generations, and even modern Arabs do not try to change it.
